故事發生在1921年的英格蘭，在一戰中所經曆的失敗令壓抑而又沉痛的氣氛籠罩了在全國上下。弗洛倫斯（麗貝卡·豪爾 Rebecca Hall 飾）是一位打假義士，正義感極強的她將戳穿謊言揭露真相視為己任，她不相信世間有鬼魂存在，存在的隻有險惡的人心。
在一所男子寄宿學校中，盛傳著鬧鬼的傳聞，在人們口中，一個非正常死亡的男孩的鬼魂終日徘徊在校園中不肯離去。為了打消學生和家長的恐懼，學校委托弗洛倫斯前來調查。弗洛倫斯很快便展開了工作，在她的精明強幹之下，事件的真相逐漸浮出了水麵。而正當她以為問題已經得到了解決準備離開時，卻發生了一件足以顛覆她此生全部信仰的事件。
