雷?費瑞爾（湯姆?克魯斯 Tom Cruise 飾）和妻子離婚了，一兒一女都跟母親生活——因為他的的貪玩懶散，疏忽責任，這個家庭才如此支離破碎。一場外星人入侵的災難卻讓他們重新建立起親密的的關係。
這天妻子繁忙，隻好把兒女交給雷照顧。電閃雷鳴天色灰暗，一切好像有些異樣。 果然，馬路上赫然一個龐大的三腳飛行器掘地而起，邪惡的火星人光顧了這個本來平靜的小鎮。人們四處逃亡，雷也帶著女兒奔走逃命，開始了生死曆險。當局想盡辦法對付外星人，卻屢屢失敗，整個世界都陷入了恐慌當中。
有了父愛的本能，平日吊兒郎當的父親變得英勇頑強，保護兒女成了他支撐他的動力和信念。
