瑪格麗特（奧利維婭·科爾曼 Olivia Colman 飾）從小在父親經營的書店裏玩耍長大，博覽群書的她對人物傳記情有獨鍾，成年後，她甚至開始嚐試著自己撰寫古人傳記。某日，瑪格麗特收到了作家溫特（瓦妮莎·雷德格瑞夫 Vanessa Redgrave 飾）的來信，信中，溫特表示希望瑪格麗特能夠替她立書作傳。
