保羅（理查德·帕斯科 Richard Pasco 飾）的父親和哥哥客死他鄉，想要揭開其中真相的保羅來到了他們生前所生活的小鎮進行調查。這個小鎮上的所有居民都給保羅一種非常詭異的感覺，他們唯唯諾諾抖抖霍霍，仿佛有什麽恐怖的東西隱藏在暗夜裏，隨時都會跑出來要他們的性命一樣。
納馬洛博士（彼得·庫欣 Peter Cushing 飾）曾經是父親的助手，這個男人和一位神秘的美女卡拉（芭芭拉·謝莉 Barbara Shelley 飾）的詭異行蹤吸引了保羅的注意。卡拉似乎患有一種奇怪的病，經常會昏倒並且失去記憶，而納馬洛博士顯然對卡拉情有獨鍾，擔負著她的保護者的身份。那麽，父親和哥哥的死，和這兩個人究竟有沒有關係呢？
