在一場藝術品拍賣會上，湯姆（丹尼斯·霍珀 Dennis Hopper 飾）遇見了名為喬納森（布魯諾·甘茨 Bruno Ganz 飾）的男人。喬納森患有血液方麵的疾病，這對於他那並不富裕的家庭來說無異於雪上加霜。黑手黨找到了湯姆希望他能夠幫他們完成一項暗殺任務，不願意鋌而走險的湯姆想到了喬納森。
湯姆向喬納森保證，如果後者能夠代替他完成任務，那麽湯姆的家庭將會得到一大筆的報酬，與此同時，湯姆賄賂了喬納森的主治醫師，兩人合夥蒙騙了喬納森，讓他以為自己的病情發生了急速惡化。就這樣，心中充滿了痛苦和絕望的喬納森走上了一條不歸路，而看著喬納森苦苦掙紮的模樣，湯姆的心中竟然也產生了一種說不清道不明的情緒。
