不久之前，溫德爾（傑克·萊蒙 Jack Lemmon 飾）的父親在一場車禍中喪生，這讓溫德爾不得不千裏迢迢的趕到意大利去處理父親的遺體。沒想到，在這場車禍中喪生的並不隻父親一人，還有一個他聞所未聞的陌生女子。原來，這名女子是父親的舊情人，每一年，他們都會在意大利幽會。父親的出軌讓溫德爾十分震驚，同樣震驚的還有同樣趕來處理遺體的陌生女子的女兒帕米拉（朱麗葉特·米爾斯 Juliet Mills 飾）。
思想上的差異讓溫德爾和帕米拉之間產生了諸多的誤會，但隨著時間的流逝，父母親之間深厚而動人的感情引導著他們慢慢領悟愛情的真諦，一段美妙情緣就此展開。
