經曆了上一集令人難以置信的變故後，萊姆波特家的長子達爾頓（Ty Simpkins 飾）暫時擺脫惡靈的糾纏，而靈媒伊莉絲（林·沙燁 Lin Shaye 飾）則慘死室中，達爾頓的父親喬什（帕特裏克·威爾森 Patrick Wilson 飾）蒙受殺人嫌疑。由於警方需要繼續調查他們的房子，喬什隻得帶著妻子蘭妮（羅絲·拜恩 Rose Byrne 飾）和三個孩子暫時回到母親勞瑞安（芭芭拉·赫希 Barbara Hershey 飾）家居中。本以為一切回歸正常，但是蘭妮和孩子們似乎仍在飽受惡靈的糾纏。 勞瑞安意識到事態的嚴重性，於是請來僅次於伊莉絲的靈媒師卡爾（Steve Coulter 飾），試圖將一切恢複正常，然而事態卻朝著不可預測的方向發展……
