懷揣著成為藝術家的夢想，托德（威廉·阿瑟東 William Atherton 飾）來到了好萊塢，在這裏，他成為了一名布景繪製員，並且解釋了在旅館裏做會計的霍梅爾（唐納德·薩瑟蘭 Donald Sutherland 飾）。這兩個男人之間脆弱的友誼很快就因為一個名叫菲耶（凱倫·布萊克 Karen Black 飾）的女人的出現而產生了裂痕。
菲耶渴望成為電影明星，但是蒼白的現實讓她不得不幹起了應召女郎的勾當。菲耶的墮落讓托德十分的憤怒，似乎是為了和托德對著幹，菲耶選擇了懦弱的霍梅爾，和他開始了同居的生活。雖然和霍梅爾住在了一起，但菲耶始終沒有停止過在外麵尋歡作樂。
