愛女艾麗絲被瘋狗咬死，獸醫帕特裏克·戴利（Aidan Gillen 飾）和妻子露易絲（Eva Birthistle 飾）和妻子搬到地處偏遠的醒木鎮居住，渴望找到繼續人生之路的勇氣。他們的生活看似平淡無奇，但是痛失愛女的悲傷與絕望從未遠去，時時攪擾著戴利夫婦的神經。醒目鎮平靜安詳，但在這份表象之下似乎又隱藏著不為人知的秘密。偶然機會，露易絲得知這個秘密，通過神秘的儀式可以讓死去未滿一年的人短暫複活3天，條件是請求者將永遠與醒目鎮聯係在一起。為了見到朝思暮想的女兒，戴利夫婦答應了這個條件。
儀式過後，艾麗絲重返人間，但是意想不到的情況接連發生。斯人已逝，強求不得……
